According to Madison Police Detective Mike Rent, officers first noticed the vehicle driving recklessly through town and tried to conduct a traffic stop but the van sped off toward Illinois 203.
Rent said the van, occupied by three people, was southbound on the highway when it crossed over the center line and struck a northbound pickup truck head on. Two of the three occupants of the van were killed in the crash. The third occupant and the driver of the pickup were rushed to area hospitals.
Police have not identified the deceased and Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn was not available for comment Wednesday. Police at the scene learned the van was stolen and are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Illinois 203 at Big Bend Road was closed in both directions for several hours following the crash.
