Mascoutah man crashes truck between two houses, causing gas leak

An 81-year-old man crashed his truck between two houses in Mascoutah, striking a meter on the side of the home and causing a gas leak Thursday morning, according to police.

Mascoutah Police Chief Bruce Fleshren said the driver, Milford Burton of Mascoutah, drove his 2010 Ford Ranger pickup between two houses at 501 Impala Drive at 7:45 a.m. Burton attempted to pull into a driveway and apparently missed the brake, Fleshren said.

Burton was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

No one was injured, according to Fleshren. However, the occupants of three houses on Impala were evacuated as a precaution. A police and fire presence could be seen Thursday morning on Harnett Street near Mascoutah Middle School and Mascoutah Elementary School.

“Everyone was safe at the school,” Fleshren said. “There was never any danger to the schools.”

Ameren Illinois spokesman Brian Bretsch said Ameren crews received a call about the incident at just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and crews arrived on scene by 9 a.m. and secured the area.

He said crews turned off the gas to the home on Impala at around 9:30 a.m., and repairs were completed just before 11 a.m.

In addition to the damaged gas meter, the crash resulted in other property damage as well as a portion of the wall of the house at 501 Impala Drive was pushed in about one foot, Fleshren said.
