Five vehicles pile up on I-64 near Caseyville
Multiple vehicles piled up Friday morning on Interstate 64 near Caseyville, temporarily shutting down the westbound lanes.
According to police reports, at least two tractor-trailers and three passenger cars were involved in a pile-up in the westbound lanes of the interstate at mile marker 9, which is near the Illinois 157 interchange.
The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. Several area fire departments responded to the scene.
Initially the westbound lanes were completely closed by the crash. Police said at 11 a.m. they had opened the left shoulder so traffic could trickle through as the cleanup continued.
By 11:30 a.m. the last wrecked car was loaded onto a flatbed tow truck and firefighters were washing down the pavement. One lane was open, but westbound traffic was backed up well past the O’Fallon interchange with Highway 50.
There was no immediate word from police about injuries or the cause of the crash.
