According to Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr., Hern was eastbound on Illinois 158 at just after 7 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a turn in the highway near its intersection with Freeburg-Douglas Road. Hern ran off the pavement and hit a stop sign before flying off his motorcycle and landing in a corn field.

Passing motorists stopped to help. But neither they nor paramedics who arrived a few minutes later were able to save Hern’s life.

It was the second fatal motorcycle accident in the metro-east this week. A rider died Tuesday near St. Jacob.
