Belleville Police investigate car break-ins

Belleville police are investigating a series of car burglaries in the area of the first block of South 38th Street.

Two residents reported to police that their car windows were broken and valuables and a small amount of money were taken from inside during the overnight hours on Thursday, said Belleville Police Det. Sgt. Mark Heffernan.

The cars were parked on the street, Heffernan said.

The burglaries may be connected to three other car burglaries on Ben Louis Drive, Bedford Drive and Chaucer Drive on Oct. 21. In those cases, Heffernan said one of the car windows was pried open, one car was unlocked and the other car window was broken to gain access to the vehicle’s contents. The suspects took a small amount of cash and other valuables, Heffernan said.

It isn’t clear whether the burglaries were connected, Heffernan said. Police are following a few leads in the earlier burglaries, but Heffernan said anyone who has information should call police at 618-234-1212.

“I want to remind people to lock their cars and secure their valuables inside their homes to prevent being a victim of this crime,” Heffernan said.
