East St. Louis man charged with beating girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter

A 22-year-old man was being held in the East St. Louis jail Thursday after police were called to investigate suspected abuse of a 2-year-old girl.

East St. Louis Police were notified by personnel at Cardinal Glenn Memorial Hospital For Children on Oct. 26. East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Hubbard said the child had welts and bruises all over her body.

The boyfriend, Devese Ursery of East St. Louis, was being held on a charge of aggravated battery of a child. His bail was set at $50,000.

Both the 24-year-old mother and her boyfriend were questioned Monday at the mother’s residence in the 700 block of North 51st Street.

“The mother said her boyfriend had abused the toddler,” Hubbard said.

The toddler was with her grandmother as of Thursday, police said. Hubbard said police weren’t aware of a motive.
