East St. Louis man killed crossing highway in Alton

An East St. Louis man staying in an Alton hotel was killed Sunday attempting to cross Homer Adams Parkway.

Benjamin C. George, 24, of East St. Louis was crossing Homer Adams Parkway in the 1700 block at about 6 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a westbound passenger car, according to the Madison County Coroner’s Office.

George was staying at the Super 8 Motel located in that area of Alton. He was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton and was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. The autopsy showed he died of blunt head trauma. Routine toxicology tests are pending.

The incident is under investigation by the Alton Police Department. Spokeswoman Lt. Emily Hejna said the driver did not flee the scene, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
