In an effort to cater to the large Hispanic population in Fairmont City and provide banking services to an under-served market, The Bank of Edwardsville has opened a new branch in town that is fully staffed by bilingual tellers.
Located inside the Fairmont City Library at 2870 N. 44th St., the branch has a staff that is fluent in both Spanish and English.
The bank opened the branch Monday morning.
Happy hops (and grapes, too)
Happy Hop Homebrew & Gourmet will soon open a second store for metro-east home brewers that will also appeal to home vintners. Owner Christian Powell has owned and operated his Belleville home brewing supply store at 122 E. Main St. for the past three years. The Collinsville native says he hopes to open his new store, to be known as Happy Hop Homebrew & Winemaking, at 103 E. Vandalia St. in Edwardsville, within a week. Stay tuned.
Mexican restaurant opens third metro-east locale
An established Mexican eatery in Belleville has opened a second locale in town. You can now find Margaritas Mexican Restaurant & Cantina at 4817 W. Main St., inside a building where Pizza Hut had once operated. Also known as Margaritas West, the new Mexican restaurant serves the same dishes as it has for years downtown at 108 E. A St. Margaritas has a third location at 7551 Illinois 160, Suite A, in New Baden.
A taste of Chicago coming soon to Belleville
The marquee outside reads “ALMOST DONE,” as proprietor Mike Naser and his crew finish renovation of the former Arby’s restaurant on Belleville’s West Main Street, where he said he anticipates opening his restaurant, Tasty’s Chicago Grill, by next month. The eatery will reoccupy a long-shuttered building that has been repainted in bright red, green and yellow and the interior is being remodeled. Naser, whose menu features Chicago-style hot dogs, chili dogs, burgers and gyros, also operates Tasty’s Chicago Grill restaurants in Decatur and recently opened a second locale in Peoria.
New look at Swansea Schnucks
Impact Strategies will soon wrap up the interior renovation at Schnucks in Swansea. The construction-management firm based in Fairview Heights started the job in September and has partnered with architectural firm Kuhlmann Design Group of St. Louis on the project. New public restrooms, new lighting throughout the store, updated sales floor décor, new refrigerated cases and a renovated pharmacy department have been added to the grocery store at 2665 N. Illinois St.
