Investigators search for clues in Belleville fire

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that gutted a Belleville home Thursday.

According to Belleville Fire Department Chief Tom Pour, a call came in at 11:30 a.m. about smoke coming from the roof of the house at 138 Lakeshore Drive in the southwest part of town.

A woman who lived at the home told firefighters she left the house for a while and when she got back the house was on fire. No one else was home when the flames ignited.

“It sat back from the road in a spot that was out of view for most people,” Pour said. “By the time it was spotted, the fire was going pretty good.”

Investigators believe the fire started in the east end of the house, which is the area where the bedrooms are located.

“It only took a few minutes for us to put it out,” Pour said, “but it appears the house is going to be a total loss.”
