47-year-old Madison man killed when he’s hit by vehicle in Pontoon Beach
Police confirmed that a pedestrian struck early Monday in Pontoon Beach has died.
The man, identified by police as Chandler Terrell, 47, of Madison, was hit by a vehicle about 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of Illinois 111 and Engineer Road.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Gateway Regional Hospital. An hour later, Terrell was pronounced dead.
Pontoon Beach Police Chief Chris Modrusic said investigators are unsure why the victim was crossing the heavily-traveled state highway.
“We don’t know if he was trying to catch a bus or what he was doing,” Modrusic said. “But the driver is being very cooperative. The driver stayed at the scene and is one of the people who called 911.”
An Illinois State Police accident-reconstruction team was at the scene in the aftermath of the accident along with investigators from the Madison County Coroner’s Office, trying to piece together what happened.
