Dreaming of a wet Christmas? Here’s the holiday forecast

Skies will be partly cloudy and temperatures well above normal Thursday for Christmas Even the metro-east.

The high will reach 56, according to the National Weather Service. That’s 16 degrees warmer than the average high for late December in the St. Louis metropolitan area, 40.

The overnight low will reach only one degree cooler than the usual high, dropping to 39 Thursday night under mostly sunny skies. The typical low for this time of year is 25.

For Christmas Day Friday, skies will be partly sunny with a high of 54.

Friday night, the temperature will drop only to 48 as a system of showers begins to move into the area.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain Friday night.

The likelihood of showers will increase to 100 percent Saturday and into Saturday night when the high will be 64 and the low will be 43.

The chance of showers is pegged at 70 percent during the day Sunday when the high will be 44. The chance of rain will decrease to 60 percent Sunday night when the low will be 44.

By the time the wet weather system moves out of the area on Tuesday, 3-6 inches of rain are expected to fall.
