Child hit by garbage truck in Fairview Heights

A 5-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after he was run over by a garbage truck.

Fairview Heights police reported that the child was hit while on his bike about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 5600 block of East Drive by an Aspen Waste Systems Inc. garbage truck.

The child had extensive injuries to his lower body but was conscious and talking when officers arrived.

The boy was transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville, where the child stabilized, and was then airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The child was listed in critical, but stable, condition.

No citations have been issued against the garbage truck driver. The accident was being investigated.
