Man dies when vehicle falls on him at Okawville repair shop

News-Democrat

A 50-year-old Addieville man died Friday afternoon or evening when he was crushed by a pickup he was working under at a repair shop north of Okawville.

Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger said David Martin was working on a small pickup at a repair shop owned by Martin’s father-in-law on Coal Ford Road, north of Okawville.

Styninger said Martin apparently had jacked the truck up and was underneath it, working on the undercarriage. The jack somehow slipped and fell onto Martin.

Martin was last seen alive about 4:30 p.m. His body was discovered by his father-in-law about 6:45 p.m., after Martin failed to answer calls to his cell phone.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7:45 p.m.

Styninger said Martin died of asphyxiation due to chest trauma.
