Waterloo woman is killed in three-car crash near Red Bud
A Waterloo woman was killed and a Red Bud man charged following a crash Sunday night on Illinois 3 near Red Bud.
An Illinois State Police report stated Dennis J. Malott, 63, of Red Bud, was driving east on Illinois 3 just east of the Great River Road at about 8 p.m. when his 2004 Ford Explorer crossed into the westbound lane. Police say a westbound GMC Acadia attempted to swerve to avoid the oncoming Ford, but the vehicles collided. The Ford continued in the westbound lane and collided with a westbound 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer that was following the GMC.
Killed in the crash was Melanie D. Guerra, 34, of Waterloo, who was a passenger in the GMC. Robert W. Guerra, 36, also of Waterloo, who was the driver of the GMC, was injured and transported to a local hospital. Four young children in the GMC—including boys aged 7, 4 and less than a year, and an 11-year-old girl—also were injured and transported to hospitals.
GUESTBOOK: Offer your condolences to the family of Melanie D. Guerra
The 17-year-old female driver of the Mitsubishi and two passengers—females aged 16 and 17—were not hurt.
Malott was hurt in the crash and transported to an area hospital. He faces two charges: Improper lane usage and driving an uninsured vehicle. State Police are still investigating.
