Fairview Heights woman charged with theft

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office has charged a woman who works as a secretary to the Centreville mayor with theft. The charge does not involve her employment.

Nakia N. Daniels, 41, of Fairview Heights, who works as a secretary for Centreville Mayor Maurius Jackson, was charged in late January with two counts of theft, which are class 3 felonies.

The charging documents state that Daniels took control of money belonging to Conquesha Brooks “in excess of $500 intending to deprive Brooks permanently” from using her money.

Bond for Daniels was set at $40,000, which she posted the following day.

Daniels could not be reached for comment. However, her attorney, Samantha Kerth of Belleville, said, “It’s a family issue that got out of hand. This is her niece bringing these charges through the state’s attorney’s office. This is not something I believe is newsworthy. I don’t believe a family matter is newsworthy. We will be taking it to a hearing next week.”

A hearing is slated for Feb. 19 in St. Clair County Court.
