An SIUE mathematics instructor who dubs herself a political outsider formally announced her bid for the Illinois General Assembly seat currently held by Republican Dwight Kay.

Katie Stuart, a Democrat from Edwardsville, made her candidacy official on the steps of the Madison County Courthouse Thursday.

“As I’ve walked door-to-door, talking to hundreds of local residents the last few months, I continue to hear the same concerns from families who are frustrated by the political gridlock in Springfield and empty promises from politicians like Dwight Kay that are hurting our communities,” Stuart said. “It shouldn’t take a mathematician to solve our state’s budget problems, but it’s clear that some politicians are more concerned with partisan politics than doing the job they were elected to do, like protecting children, students, the disabled, and our mothers, fathers and grandparents from devastating budget cuts.”

Kay, of Glen Carbon, has held his seat in the 112th District since 2010.
