A five-year-old boy was killed in a crash Saturday night on Interstate 64 near Caseyville.
The child was identified by the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office as Brady James Teel, 5, of Herrin. He died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
The child’s mother, a 31-year-old from Herrin, was traveling west on Interstate 64 near mile marker 10 about 8 p.m. in a 2003 turquoise Pontiac Sunfire when it struck a 2003 tan PT Cruiser in the rear, Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said.
The PT Cruiser, driven by a 39-year-old male from East St. Louis with a 36-year-old female passenger from Cahokia, was in the left lane and was attempting to pull onto the left shoulder because the vehicle was experiencing mechanical trouble. The driver of the PT Cruiser turned on his turn signal, began to slow and move toward the shoulder when he looked in his rear-view mirror and saw the driver of a Sunfire look down.
“When she looked back up, it was too late to prevent the crash,” Dye said.
Neither driver nor the passenger were identified.
The driver and passenger in the PT Cruiser were taken to Belleville area hospitals where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Brady James was seated behind his mother in a child safety seat, Dye said. When troopers arrived, efforts were made to resuscitate the child. He was taken to a Belleville hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The mother was treated for minor injuries.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin.
