▪ A pair of suspicious fires burned a home and a business to the ground early Monday in the Millstadt area.
The Kountry Korners tavern on Floraville Road went up in flames at just before 6 a.m. About 20 minutes later a vacant house in the 400 block of North Jefferson burned.
Both structures were severely damaged. The brick, ranch-style home was gutted by flames while the bar saw half of its roof cave in.
▪ Alcohol was likely a factor in a Sunday single-vehicle crash in Freeburg that knocked the power out for part of St. Clair County, police said.
Authorities are looking for the driver of a red pickup truck that hit a power pole after traveling at a high rate of speed down Apple Street, becoming airborne after going through a ditch and, eventually smashing into the pole.
▪ The retrial of a man accused of double murder is expected to get underway Tuesday.
Randy L. McCallum, Jr. faces first-degree murder charges for the shooting death of Kevin McVay and Charles Black, both of Washington Park.
One of the victims can be heard on 9-1-1 tapes naming McCallum as the person who shot him. But the first trial was declared a mistrial when one of the jurors held out and refused to convict the suspect while the other 11 believed him to be guilty.
