Site that housed Maxwell’s, Flamingo’s restaurants has new tenant

The Belleville building that once housed the landmark Maxwell’s Restaurant, and later Flamingo’s Restaurant, has a new tenant.

According to the Belleville Zoning Board of Appeals agenda for the upcoming March 24 meeting, members of the board will consider granting a liquor license to Julie Laswell Darnall, who is listed as the owner of “The Red Onion” at 923 W. Main St.

Darnall could not be reached for comment.

There were people working inside the building Thursday afternoon, but none of them were willing to comment on the plans for the site.

Restaurateur John Steinlage operated Maxwell’s from 1976 to 2012. In 2014, Steinlage and John Bailey opened Flamingo’s Restaurant in the same building, and closed less than a year later.
