Suspect charged in Easter shooting near Belleville

The state’s attorney’s office on Tuesday formally charged a 29-year-old East St. Louis man who is accused of shooting a man and a woman on Easter morning near Belleville.

The suspected shooter, identified as Randi D. Johnson, was charged with four felonies filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court, including two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one attempt of aggravated battery with a firearm. As of Tuesday, Johnson remained in the St. Clair County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

On the morning of Easter Sunday, St. Clair County deputies were dispatched to the 1900 block of Chevy Drive off Green Mount Road to investigate the shooting. The suspect fled the scene by the time deputies arrived, Capt. Scott Weymouth said. However, Johnson, the named suspect in the investigation, later surrendered himself to authorities at the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday, authorities believe Johnson shot two victims, identified as Jada Hall and Terry Cox. Hall was shot in the thigh; Cox was shot in the back, according to the court documents. Both were treated at a nearby medical facility and were released that same day, according to Weymouth. In a previous report, authorities said the two victims and suspect know each other, but they did not release further details.

The complaint also alleges that Johnson knowingly used a handgun to shoot at a 1995 Nissan Maxima with at least one person inside. The car was located at Chevy Drive and Progress Lane in Belleville when the incident occurred. The documents also named a third victim, Roderick Harris. Johnson allegedly shot at Harris in what authorities noted as attempted aggravated battery. It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether Harris and Johnson know each other.
