The American flag that had flown outside St. Clair Township offices finally has been taken down after it was noticed the flag was damaged. The bottom clasp that affixed the flag to its pole was broken, but no one could lower the flag because it was locked into place. The man with the key happened to be a township road district employee who, along with his four coworkers, were laid off amid a budget dispute.
Wealthy Granite City lawyer Lance Callis was beaten Feb. 22 at the hands of his own son, Phillip Callis. The elder Callis was struck with a broom handle and his son’s fists. Phillip Callis also tried to strangle his 82-year-old dad, Granite City police say. He’s held in the Madison County Jail.
A Collinsville firefighter and paramedic who was dispatched to a Caseyville home where a woman was in labor ended up delivering the baby in the ambulance that was still several minutes away from a Belleville hospital. The baby’s mother nicknamed her healthy son Jesus, calling him a “miracle baby” because she didn’t know she was pregnant until she was six months along.
Charges were filed Monday against an East St. Louis man who is accused of shooting a man and woman near Belleville on Easter Sunday. Randi D. Johnson, 29, remains in custody at the St. Clair County Jail. Police say Johnson shot a man and a woman Sunday morning in the 1900 block of Chevy Drive. Johnson initially fled but later surrendered to St. Clair County Sheriff’s deputies.
Kindergarteners at Westhaven Elementary School in Belleville continue to meet in a school library instead of their classroom because tests for mold in the classroom kept coming back positive. School officials said the “inactive” mold was found in the classroom last week. Test results expected Wednesday could give the kiddos the green light to return to their normal quarters.
