Video: Robber climbs through McDonald’s drive-through window, shoots employee in Edwardsville

An alleged armed robber shot a McDonald’s employee but didn’t make off with any cash during an attempted robbery in Edwardsville early Friday.

Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven said the attempted robbery occurred at the restaurant at 1704 Troy Road. A tall, thin white man wearing dark clothes, gloves and a face mask climbed through the drive-thru window at 3:45 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the three employees preparing to open the restaurant for the day.

During that interaction, the man fired at least three shots, one of which hit a 31-year-old male employee in the leg. The suspect then tried to take cash from the register but failed. He then ran out of the store through its rear door.

A responding officer and tracking dog followed the suspect’s scent east of the restaurant but lost the trail a few blocks away.

The employee who was shot was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is urged to call Edwardsville police at 618-656-2131 or an anonymous tip line at 618-692-7552.
