IEPA resumes vehicle emissions test notices
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office on Wednesday announced the resumption of vehicle emissions test notice mailings.
The IEPA’s vehicle emissions testing contractor, Applus Technologies, Inc., has agreed to assume the responsibility of printing and mailing emissions test notices at no additional cost to the state, the agency said.
Test notices will be retroactive to the first motorists that did not receive a test notice, the IEPA said. New test notices will be mailed on a postcard size form.
Motorists who have completed testing requirements will not receive one of the new test notices, the IEPA said.
In February, IEPA and the secretary of state’s office announced notices would be suspended along with the corresponding procedures to renew license plates for vehicle owners who are required because of the state budget impasse. Vehicle owners whose license plates expired at the end of March were the first motorists who did not receive the vehicle emissions test notice.
With the resumption of vehicle emissions test notices, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced regular vehicle registration procedures will resume June 1. At that time, motorists will be subject to vehicle emissions testing will be required to comply with vehicle emissions testing requirements prior to renewing their license plate.
Reminders for vehicle registration renewals are still suspended because of the lack of a budget, said David Druker, spokesman for the secretary of state’s office. However people may go to ilsos.gov/greenmail, to sign up to receive an email reminder.
