East St. Louis firefighters responded to a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon with a report of entrapment off an exit ramp near Stan Musial Bridge.

Assistant Fire Chief Michael Dill said one man suffered severe injuries after his blue sedan attempted to exit Interstate 64 and get onto Route 3. Authorities say the driver was coming off the bridge at a high-rate of speed when he lost control and crashed. The rear end of the sedan ended up “three to four feet in the air,” stuck on a retaining wall off the road.

Dill said firefighters arrived on scene after 1 p.m. and were able to get the man out of the vehicle after 10 to 20 minutes. The fire department says it is unsure how the accident occurred.

The unidentified driver was transported to a nearby medical facility shortly after he was freed. Dill says the man suffered severe injuries to his lower body as a result of the accident.

Illinois State Police also responded to the scene Thursday.
