Top BND videos: Maryville gas line explosion injures construction worker, police recount rescue

▪  A gas line explosion and towering fireball severely injured a construction worker and consumed construction equipment along Illinois 162 in Maryville.

Maryville Police Chief Rob Carpenter said a construction crew excavating at the site of the future Villas at Nottingham hit a 10-inch steel gas line and triggered an explosion at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

▪  Longtime Maryville resident Jim Harrison says the gas main explosion and fire happened close to his home. He saw a person walk away from the flames on Wednesday afternoon.

▪  Maryville Police Sgt. Brandon Ponce and Officer Justin Krausz talk about the gas line explosion and their role in helping a construction worker to safety.

Ponce helped Krausz get construction worker John Behme to Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was then transferred to the burn unit of Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, where he was listed in critical condition on Thursday.

▪  A fire damaged the building that houses Peel Wood Fired Pizza in O’Fallon.

O’Fallon Fire Chief Brent Saunders said the fire started in a dumpster and that no one was injured during the incident.

▪  Collinsville firefighters Chris Castens and Danny Gulledge reunited with Stacey Whitson, of Caseyville, and her son DaCorrione, who they helped safely deliver one month earlier in the back of an ambulance.
