Coroner releases ID of East St. Louis man killed in house fire
A man who died in a house fire over the weekend has been identified as David Lewis, according to St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone’s office.
The coroner’s office said it was unable to confirm Lewis’ age, but said that he lived in East St. Louis.
East St. Louis firefighters found the victim’s body at 2808 Summit Ave. Saturday night. East St. Louis Assistant Fire Chief Todd Hill said a call came in to the fire department at 8:40 p.m., and when fire crews from engine houses 422 and 426 arrived on scene, the house was engulfed. The victim rented the home at 2808 Summit for the last eight years, Hill said.
Fire crews learned at the scene from the homeowner that the victim could possibly be inside. Hill said flames were coming through windows and doors. Lewis’ body was found on the floor near a bedroom on the main level of the house.
Hill said the roof and the kitchen were heavily damaged.
As of Tuesday afternoon, East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon said the state fire marshal had not released a report stating what caused the fire or where it started.
