Fire destroys garage in Centreville
Firefighters from multiple agencies helped put out a fully-involved garage fire in Centreville Friday night.
Officials on scene said it appears the fire started inside a detached garage at an unoccupied home on Gay Avenue. Camp Jackson Fire Chief Chris Davis said the home was in the process of being refurbished. The fire destroyed the detached structure and quickly spread. Davis said it reached the back side of the accompanying home and headed toward the back of a residence next door at 5215 Gay Avenue. Firefighters said the occupants inside the home next door evacuated safely.
“It was spreading pretty rapidly through the yards,” Davis said, adding that the call came in shortly after 6 p.m.
No one was injured in the incident. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Camp Jackson, Alorton, Cahokia, Church Road and Prairie DuPont fire departments responded to the scene as well as Ameren Illinois and MedStar EMS.
