Styninger said it appears the Shrums were westbound on Illinois 15 when they ran off the north side of the road, over-corrected and then ran off the south side of the road, where the vehicle flipped, landing on its top.

John Shrum was flown from the scene by Arch Helicopter to a St. Louis hospital. A report on his condition was not immediately available.

Joyce Shrum was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Brock Styninger. She appeared to have died from a fractured cervical due to blunt-force trauma. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, the coroner said.

Agencies assisting at the scene were the Washington County Ambulance Service, Nashville Police Department, Nashville Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police.
