Swansea man arrested on burglary charge after he’s confronted by homeowner

A 32-year-old Swansea man was arrested after a struggle with police and charged with burglary Monday after a reported home invasion.

Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson said the suspect is Daniel A. Rice.

According to the press release, Rice allegedly broke into a residence in the 3900 block of Heatherwood Drive in Swansea. The homeowners were inside at the time of the crime, confronted the suspect and called 911, according to police. Officers arrived within minutes and said they found Rice leaving the garage. Johnson said Rice resisted an arrest.

Police said one officer fell to the ground as the suspect reached for a black steak knife in his pocket. Another officer was able to force the suspect onto the ground and handcuff him. Police said Rice also had an open syringe.

The state’s attorney’s office charged Rice on Monday with residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance and criminal damage to property. Bail was set at $50,000. As of Tuesday, Rice remained in the St. Clair County Jail.
