Hamburger blamed for fire in Alton apartment building

A hamburger is blamed for an early morning fire that forced Alton residents from their apartment building.

The fire started at about 4 a.m. on the top floor of the two-story, brick building in the 600 block of Mather Street in Alton. The resident of the apartment told firefighters a hamburger on the stove started the blaze.

The fire left two upper floor windows blown out and char marks on the side of the building. But no one was injured in the fire, according to fire department reports.
