2 Florida men charged in vehicle break-in that spurred pursuit, lock-down at Belleville East

Belleville police say two suspects have been charged in connection with a vehicle break-in Thursday morning that led to a pursuit and a lock-down at Belleville East High School.

St. Clair County prosecutors have charged two Florida men in the case:

▪  Sigmund Brown, 19, of Hollywood, Fla., was charged with one count of burglary, a class 2 felony, and one count of resisting a peace officer, a class A misdemeanor. Brown's bond was set at $250,000.

▪  Johnathan E. Brown, 25, of West Park, Fla., was charged with one count of burglary, a class 2 felony, and two counts of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, both class 4 felonies. Brown's bond was set at $250,000.

Belleville police said the charges stem from vehicle break-ins at the Belleville East YMCA.

Both suspects have no known link to the St. Louis or metro-east area, police said..

Both suspects remained in custody on Saturday morning at the Belleville Police Department, and were be transported to the St. Clair County Jail later in the morning.

Police said additional charges may be filed in connection with O’Fallon.

O’Fallon police, investigating a vehicle break-in Thursday morning at the O’Fallon YMCA, put out a description of a suspect vehicle — a gray Chrysler minivan.

The chase began when Belleville Police spotted the suspects’ minivan at the Belleville East YMCA.

The vehicle stopped briefly, and a passenger fled the vehicle southbound toward the campus of Southwestern Illinois College. The passenger was arrested after a foot pursuit on the campus of SWIC by O’Fallon and Belleville police.

The driver of the van pulled onto the parking lot of the Belleville East campus and attempted to drive onto a footbridge. The driver ran off but was caught in a wooded area.
