Daytime classes on SWIC’s Granite City campus canceled due to fire

Daytime classes at Southwestern Illinois College’s Sam Wolf Granite City Campus were canceled Thursday due to a fire from a lightning strike, according to the school’s website.

Students were asked to stay off of the campus.

The fire in the hallway near the library was discovered about 10:10 a.m. and the campus was evacuated, said campus Executive Director Nancy Levault.

The fire was contained within 35 minutes, Levault said.

Levault said damage to ceiling tiles and roofing material was limited to the hallway, which will remain closed until repaired.

The school said classes and exams scheduled for after 3 p.m. would take place as scheduled.

Makeup exam information will be sent to students, the website states.
