Don’t Miss This: St. Louis carjacking, homicide suspect is shot dead by police in Washington Park

The man wanted by police in connection with a carjacking and homicide in downtown St. Louis last weekend was shot dead in an exchange of gunfire with police and U.S. Marshals in Washington Park Thursday. The man was identified as Devante Gates, a 21-year-old with addresses in East St. Louis and Brooklyn. Ross Randolph, a 19-year-old Belleville man who was with Gates when the carjacking and homicide occurred, turned himself in to police Tuesday.


Travelers Friday should beware of emergency railroad work that, weather permitting, CSX hopes to complete Friday near Highland. Improvements to a crossing near Lake Road and Highland Road are set to occur from 7 a.m. to noon.


Former East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore, who also worked security on Metro trains, has been charged with public contractor misconduct. Floore is accused of seeking compensation for hours he said he worked on three days in February and on two days in March. Investigators have since learned he never worked those hours.


Thursday’s baseball matchup in the Class 4A Belleville West Regional between the home team and Belleville East came to an anticlimactic end: Postponement in the 10th inning with the game tied 5-5. The reason? Darkness. There were no lights at the field. The game will pick back up Friday at 12:30 p.m.
