Police on Friday arrested a St. Louis man wanted on charges of vehicular hijacking, discharging a firearm and armed robbery in connection with a Craigslist sale that went wrong, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office said 22-year-old Calvin Fletcher Jr. pointed a gun in the direction of a person who met Fletcher on Sunday near Edwardsville in connection with a Craigslist posting about a car for sale.
According to police, the prospective seller allowed Fletcher into his 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Shortly after entering the car, Fletcher produced a handgun, pointed it at the seller and ordered him out of the car, according to police. Authorities said the seller slapped at the handgun, which was pointed at his face, and the gun discharged inside the vehicle. The seller was not injured, according to police.
Fletcher drove off with the seller’s car, police said. He eventually reached speeds of 100 mph as he drove toward St. Louis, the sheriff’s office said.
Police have since recovered the vehicle.
He has been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated discharge of a firearm and armed robbery.
Fletcher’s bail has been set at $250,000.
He is described as short (approximately 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-3), thin, with lighter skin and short dreadlocks, or twists in his hair.
