Don’t Miss This: Will Illinois falter on a budget again?

The spring session of the Illinois General Assembly is scheduled to end today, and it’s not likely a state budget for the next fiscal year will be passed before the end of the day. Last summer, the Legislature blew past the May 31 deadline and also past the end of the 2015 fiscal year. The state’s been without a budget ever since, and passage of a plan for the coming fiscal year will get more difficult after Tuesday: While lawmakers are likely to return for overtime sessions, budget votes will need a 3/5 vote to pass instead of a simple majority.

Speaking of the lack of a state budget, it continues to affect local organizations. Libraries across the metro-east that are feeling the hurt include the Belleville Public Library, which has been forced to purchase new materials at a much more sluggish rate, and the Daugherty Public Library District in Dupo, which has yet to receive state grants it is owed.

Investigators on Monday released the identity of the 24-year-old man found shot dead in Cahokia Saturday night. Lamondo C. Brown was shot in the area of Williams and Ellen streets in Cahokia around 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area at the time Brown was shot, but no gun or suspect was located by police.
