A man was shot in the face late Sunday in Belleville.
According to police reports, the victim walked to an area market when he was approached by a man he said he did not know. The stranger followed as the victim walked along the 500 block of North Douglas street questioning the victim about people they knew in common.
Suddenly the suspect pulled a firearm and told the victim not to move, Belleville Police Department Sgt. Mark Heffernan said. The victim spun around and the suspect shot him in the face.
A struggle for the gun followed and the victim managed to wrestle the gun away from the suspect. He attempted to shoot at the attacker as he ran away. But the victim told police the gun would not fire.

The victim returned to the market and asked for help. According to reports, he had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
