House fire reported in Washington Park

A fire destroyed a one-family house in Washington Park on Friday afternoon, according to firefighters.

Washington Park Fire Chief Charles Schreiber said firefighters responded to the 1800 block of North 61st Street and found that an unoccupied house had caught fire. Schreiber said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but added that it seemed “suspicious in nature.”

No one was injured as a result.

Firefighters went to investigate the scene at approximately 2:44 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of heavy black smoke in the area.

State Park Fire Department also responded to the fire. Firefighters were still working on scene at 5 p.m.
