Things to do this weekend: July heat brings out the music and dancing

If horses sweat, men perspire and women only glow – well, you can now see my glow from outer space. So the very first of five things we’re going to do this weekend is avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Cool down

Many official cooling sites are closed on weekends, but libraries are open in Belleville, Columbia, Madison County and Fairview Heights and more on Saturday; St. Clair Square Mall is open all weekend. You know the drill: Drink lots of water, stay in the shade if not in the air conditioning, and check on your elderly neighbors.

Music

Lonesome Whistle is playing for donations at the Kaskaskia Riverhouse, for the Beautify New Athens town projects. Starts at 8 p.m. until midnight; call 618-407-5888 for more information

Homecoming

The Troy Lions Homecoming has carnival rides and food as well as a parade on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Live music starts with the Shriners Band at 6:30 and the Well Hungarians take over at 8 p.m.

Ohm away the heat

Edwardsville again holds Yoga in the Park from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Leclaire Lake Park, 927 Hale Ave., Edwardsville. It’s free; bring your own water. According to www.accuweather.com, it’ll only be 83 degrees at 9 a.m. – but feel like 97. Go to www.cityofedwardsville.com or call 618-692-7538 for more information.

Summer Ball, 18th Century Style

Period dress is encouraged but not required at the Friends of the Fort Summer Ball at the American Legion, at 509 Henry St., Prairie du Rocher, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Dance, or stumble along, to 18th Century music by Cousin Curtis and the Cash Rebates. There will be a special performance by Les Danseurs de Fort de Chartres. Fort de Chartres folks encourage a $20 donation, with money benefitting the nonprofit Les Amis du Fort de Chartres for work on the historic site. For more information, call 618-284-7230.
