Illinois American Water to carry out hydrant flushing in August

Illinois American Water this month plans to carry out it annual “free chlorine” and main hydrant-flushing program in the metro east.

The annual maintenance is needed to ensure high quality water service to homes and businesses, the water utility said.

During August, Illinois American Water plans to switch to a form of chlorine known as “free chlorine,” which does not contain ammonia, the water utility said. This stronger disinfectant is typically used when flushing water mains.

During the temporary treatment change, customers may experience a more noticeable chlorine taste or odor in their water, but Illinois American said there is no reason for concern.

Annual fire hydrant-water main flushing also is planned to ensure continued water quality and fire hydrant operation for public safety, the water utility said. When Illinois American Water crews are working, customers may experience a temporary drop in water pressure or have some discolored water for a short period of time.

If this occurs, customers should let the water run until the water clears, the utility said.

The maintenance program may temporarily affect customers in all direct service communities in the Belleville, East St. Louis and Granite City areas and also sale-for-resale (wholesale) communities, Illinois American Water said.
