Firefighters put out blaze in Washington Park house

Firefighters in Washington Park put out a fire inside a home that was showing heavy smoke Friday afternoon at North 54th Street.

The structure fire was reported at about 12:30 p.m. Friday at 1403 N. 54th St. Smoke was showing when firefighters arrived.

Washington Park Fire Chief Charles Schreiber said the fire was reported at an occupied home but that no one was inside at the time.

“Upon arrival, it had heavy smoke. (We) entered the occupied residence. A one-bedroom fire was knocked out pretty quick,” Schreiber said. “We’ve got intensive heat and smoke damage inside the residence. The residents weren’t home at the time of the fire.”

State Park Fire Department assisted Washington Park firefighters. A MedStar ambulance and Ameren Illinois truck also responded.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
