Belleville in 2017 paid its 469 employees a total of $21.5 million, or 15 percent more than they made in 2011.

Topping the list at $119,036 was City Attorney Garrett Hoerner.

Second was Belleville police officer Paul R. Anderson at $112,452, thanks to $46,615 in overtime. His boss, Police Chief William Clay III, was not immediately available for comment on the overtime pay. Clay was No. 3 on the city payroll at $108,909.

Swansea, Monroe County and Madison County worker payrolls for 2017 were recently added to the public salary database after leaders responded to Illinois Freedom of Information Act requests. More local governments will be added as they are received, but government payrolls back to 2011 are available using the search tool below.
