Belleville West coach no longer employed by District 201 after altercation with student
A football coach is no longer employed by Belleville Township High School District 201 following an alleged “physical altercation” with a student athlete. The Belleville Police Department is investigating the case, authorities said.
The coach’s name was not released, nor is it clear if the coach resigned or was fired.
The Belleville Police Department was called to the school to investigate a “disturbance” at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement by the department. The “investigation is open and pending” and other details about the case were not released.
District 201 Superintendent Brian Mentzer on Wednesday released a statement that said, “The individual is no longer an employee of the district.”
The incident occurred following football practice and the school “informed all appropriate authorities, and launched an investigation.”
“The school district took immediate measures to ensure that the football coach had no contact with anyone at school or on school property,” the district’s statement said.
“Belleville West takes these incidents seriously. The safety and security of our students and staff are of utmost importance.”
Mentzer said he could not release other details about the altercation, including details about the coach’s employment separation from the district.
The Belleville West football team has an 0-8 record this season.
