A 27-year-old Belleville man died Wednesday night after a three-vehicle crash in Belleville, authorities said.

Ryan Campbell was pronounced deceased Wednesday night in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said.

Campbell was the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash in the 700 block of Carlyle Avenue at the intersection with Denvershire Drive on the east side of the city, officials said.

Firefighters had to extricate Campbell from his vehicle and he was conscious at the time he was rescued, Belleville Fire Chief LLoyd J. Stinson said.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro identified as the one driven by Campbell was going east on Carlyle Avenue “at an excessive rate of speed,” according to witness statements taken by Belleville police officers, who received a call for help at 8:40 p.m.

The driver of the Camaro lost control and collided head-on with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, with both vehicles sustaining heavy front-end damage, according to a news release from Belleville Police Lt. Col. Mark Heffernan.

The Camaro ended up in a ditch on the south side of Carlyle Avenue.

A third vehicle, a 2018 Kia Sportage, was going west and sustained damage to the driver’s side possibly by debris from the impact of the Camaro and the Malibu.

The passenger in the Camaro, a 27-year-old woman, was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital with apparent minor injuries.

The driver of the Malibu declined to be taken to the hospital. One person in the Sportage had possible minor injuries but declined to be taken to the hospital.
