Belleville residents have access to fresh groceries with opening of new West Main market
DG Market is now open on Belleville’s West Main Street at the old Fischer’s site.
The new store is the third DG Market to open in St. Clair County area, following stores in Freeburg and Smithton.
DG Market offers fresh meats, eggs, dairy and produce in addition to the other goods typically found at a Dollar General store, such as household goods, hygiene and beauty products, seasonal items and non-perishable and frozen food items.
Since Ruler Foods closed one year ago, some considered the west end of Belleville a “food desert” in need of a new grocery store.
Mayor Patty Gregory recently reminded me that the DG Market was initially intended to be a regular Dollar General store. Economic Development Director Clifford Cross stated this during an April City Council meeting when the plans for the store were discussed.
At that time, the council highlighted Belleville’s need for more grocery stores. Dollar General was encouraged to consider opening a DG Market instead.
Gregory is pleased Belleville was able to open a second grocery store this year. Aldi opened a new store on Carlyle Avenue in February.
Construction on the 10,640-square-foot store started in June.
DG Market is located at 2100 W. Main St. in Belleville. Hours listed online are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call 618-717-5990 or visit dollargeneral.com.
