SUV driver critically injured in crash with trash truck, Belleville police say

A man was critically injured in a crash between his SUV and a trash truck Friday morning, Belleville police said.

The crash occurred at about 9 a.m. at the intersection of Mascoutah Avenue and South Green Mount Road.

The driver of a Buick Encore, who is in his 20s, was taken to a St. Louis hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, according to a statement from Belleville Assistant Police Chief Mark Heffernan.

The driver of a Republic Services trash truck suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. He is in his 50s.

Heffernan said that at the time of the collision, the trash truck was going west on Mascoutah Avenue and the Buick Encore was eastbound on Mascoutah Avenue, turning onto northbound Green Mount Road.

The crash remains under investigation by Belleville detectives, who responded to get witness statements.
