Two persons suffered injuries and another had to be rescued by firefighters after fire broke out Wednesday in an apartment building on North 45th Street in Belleville.

Fire Chief Stephanie Mills said the two victims apparently suffered non-life-threatening injuries and they were taken to a hospital.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a resident trapped on the second floor of the two-story, 16-unit building at 200 N. 45th St.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Mills said. The blaze was reported at 11:21 a.m.

“We just know it started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second,” she said.

The American Red Cross responded to assist victims.

Multiple people were in the building at the time the fire started but Mills did not have an exact count of the number of residents.

Mills did not know whether the damages to eight of the units could be repaired for residents to return.
