Starting Friday afternoon, a downtown Belleville road will reopen from its temporary closure for the ongoing construction project at the St. Clair County Courthouse.

The first block of South First Street, between West Main and West Washington streets, returns to a one-way street for all traffic beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, the county announced Thursday.

The road had been closed due to the courthouse construction. The project includes expanding the lobby and improving the security checkpoint before people can enter the building’s offices or courtrooms.

The work will create a street-level entrance on the southwest side of the building at the corner of South First and West Washington streets.

The southwest entrance is also expected to reopen this month after closing to the public on March 11, 2024.

The county continues to provide updates on construction and building access at its website, www.co.st-clair.il.us.
