A fire damaged Grappa Growlers, a popular bar and retail liquor store and gift shop in Belleville, on Saturday morning.

The business was closed at the time, and no one was hurt, according to Belleville Fire Chief Curt Lougeay.

“They had a pretty good amount of damage,” he said. “It’s not going to be something that has a real quick fix, unfortunately.”

Grappa Growlers is at 1501 N. Belt West.

Lougeay said a fire-alarm call came in about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they could smell smoke, so they entered the building and extinguished the fire.

“There was some smoke damage throughout the building and some localized fire damage,” Lougeay said “Right now our investigators are trying to determine what caused it.”

Preliminary observations led firefighters to believe the fire may have started in the basement.

The bar’s owners couldn’t be reached for comment on Saturday afternoon, and nothing had been posted on their Facebook page about the fire. They were on site in the morning, Lougeay said.

“They’ve been there a long time, and it’s a pretty popular place,” he said “So it’s sad that this happened.”

Belleville sent four fire trucks to the scene. Swansea, Signal Hill, East Side and Northwest fire departments were placed on call in case other fires occurred in the city.

Grappa Growlers opened in 2011, according to its website.

“With our unique atmosphere, you can sip on a glass of house wine, open your favorite bottle of wine from the store, or enjoy one rotating craft beer on tap, all while checking out our store.

“With a large selection of global wines, craft beers, and a unique collection of Spirits, you are sure to find something you love.”

UPDATE: The bar posted on its Facebook page Saturday night, expressing gratitude to first responders and customers.

“We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Belleville Fire Department,” it stated. “You are truly amazing humans, and we are incredibly grateful for everything you do. We appreciate each and every person who assisted today.

“Thank you as well to all of our thoughtful customers who reached out with kind words and support it truly means the world to us.

“Unfortunately, Grappa Growlers will be closed until further notice. We’ll share updates as soon as we’re able. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
