City attorney to issue report on handling of Lindenwood zoning

Ward 2 Alderman Mike Buettner, who has asked for the city attorney to investigate how Mayor Mark Eckert’s administration handled Lindenwood University-Belleville’s student-housing cases, said he expects to hear from City Attorney Garrett Hoerner by Thursday.

Eckert has said Hoerner would examine Buettner’s complaints. Hoerner has said he expects Eckert to comment after the legal review was completed.

Buettner made his request for the investigation on Oct. 5 during a City Council meeting.

Lindenwood students have been allowed to move into homes purchased by the university, but the college has not yet received special-use permits for dozens of the homes. A zoning hearing on the college’s special-use application will be held Oct. 28.

Buettner asked Hoerner for his opinion on whether the city could be held liable if there was a “tragedy” at one of the Lindenwood homes.
