Business Briefing: 7 percent of Illinois veterans unemployed

On this Veteran’s Day, the U.S. Census Bureau has released figures revealing the state of veterans, state by state.

In Illinois, the veteran unemployment rate is 7 percent. That’s higher than the 5.3 percent national rate.

The statistics also reveal that 1,234 Illinois veterans are homeless.

But of those veterans who are employed across the state, they earn an average median annual income of $62,214, which is higher than the $61,884 national average median income.

St. Louis-based Express Scripts has sued drugmaker Horizon Pharma for about $140 million claiming the company failed to meet their responsibilities per their network agreement. Express Scripts has since dumped the company. Read more here.

Macy’s is the latest big-box retailer to report sluggish sales as it heads into the holiday shopping season. The company has reported sales fell by 3.6 percent in the third quarter and has lowered its profit outlook for the year. Shares of Macy’s stock were down 8 percent in early trading Wednesday. In some good news for Macy’s, the retailer has announced a deal with LensCrafters that will bring up to 500 of the optical retailer’s vision centers inside Macy’s stores. Macy’s already has a deal with Luxottica to put 670 Sunglass Huts in Macy’s department stores. Find out more here.
